Reasons your AC is leaking water

Reasons Your AC Is Leaking Water

Date: 04-01-2026

Reasons Your AC Is Leaking Water

If you notice water collecting near your air conditioner, it’s a sign something isn’t working properly. In South Carolina’s humid climate, this issue is common—but it should never be ignored. Here are the most common reasons your AC may be leaking water, along with what homeowners can safely do about it.

1. Clogged Condensate Discharge Line

Your AC extracts moisture from the air, which drains through a condensate line. Over time, dirt, algae, and debris can clog the line, causing water to back up and leak inside your home. Routine upkeep can help prevent this issue.

2. Dirty Air Filter

A clogged air filter restricts airflow, which can cause the evaporator coil to freeze. When it melts, excess water may overflow the drain pan. Replacing your air filter regularly is a simple, homeowner-safe fix.

3. Low Refrigerant Quantities

Low refrigerant can also cause the evaporator coil to freeze and eventually leak water as it thaws. This is not a DIY fix... contact a licensed HVAC technician for safe handling.

4. Damaged or Rusted Drain Pan

Older systems may have worn or rusted drain pans that can no longer hold water effectively. If your system is aging, it may be time for repair or replacement.

5. Improper Installation

If your AC unit wasn’t installed correctly, it may not be level, causing water to drain improperly and leak. A professional inspection can identify and safely correct this issue.

Additional Tips

  • Replace air filters every 1–3 months, notably during peak cooling season.
  • Schedule annual HVAC upkeep to avoid clogs and system failures.
  • Keep the area around your indoor unit clean and clear.

Water leaks from your AC are often preventable with proper maintenance. If the problem persists, always rely on a licensed HVAC professional in South Carolina to ensure safe and effective repairs.
